Heart Sun Catchers - Valentines Day Crafts for Kids

I cannot believe Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. It feels like just yesterday we were putting up our Christmas decorations and ringing in the New Year. Here we are, already looking for engaging activities for Valentine’s Day and how we can keep our children entertained.

Hearts

I came across these crayon sun catchers and immediately wanted to try them in little heart shapes. I absolutely love how they turned out. They are super easy to make and look beautiful hung on your window.

I have smaller children so they were unable to participate very much in the construction of these. Small crayon bits, scissors and a hot iron do not exactly scream baby friendly. Theo loved helping mommy pick the colours. He also enjoyed playing with these once we finished. I hung them on the window for everyone to see and touch! The texture of them is super soft and fun for toddler sensory.

If you have older children I absolutely recommend having them assist, with supervision of course!

You will need:

  • Crayons (Preferably colours red, pink, orange, purple & white).

  • Pencil Sharpener (or Grater)

  • Wax Paper

  • Iron

  • Scissors

  • Ironing Board

  • Parchment Paper

Instructions:
1) Lay out a long rectangular sheet of wax paper and fold in half long-ways.
2) On one half of the sheet, spread out a small amount of crayon shavings onto the paper. Ensure the layer is even and spread out.
3) Fold paper in half and fold up all three of the open edges
4) Place wax paper between two sheets of parchment paper on your ironing board. This will protect both your iron and ironoing board should any crayon max melt out.
5) Iron on low heat until the crayons are melted. This should only take a few seconds as they melt extremely fast.
6) Once melted, set the wax paper aside until fully cooled. I let this sit overnight.
7) Cut out heart shapes in various sizes.
8) Cut out a small hole towards the top and hang with a string. I used dental floss as I had extra on hand, however any string would do, even fishing wire!
9) Hang hearts in a window to catch all the sunlight.

Enjoy the beauty of these hearts for your home and children’s entertainment.
