Easter Egg Dye - A fun Easter Kids Activity

This is the first year my kids are ecstatic for Easter. We have been reading Easter themed books, talking about family traditions, and let’s not forget the Easter BUNNY! This is the first year they understand a special day is upon us. I wanted to surprise them with a fun sensory activity that is super easy to make.

I’ll be honest, we haven’t dyed eggs since I was a kid myself! Pinterest was quite overwhelming in the egg dying department as there is an abundance of recipes. It was hard for this mama to decide which route to take. Did I want to use paint, food colouring, glitter? I even found recipes to dye them with food scraps! In the end, I chose a super classic method using food colouring, since it’s always a staple in our house.

You will need:
White Eggs
Food Colouring
Water
Easter Grass
Vinegar
Cups/Bowls
Spoons or Whisk

Instructions:
1) Gently place eggs in water and bring to a boil.
2) Cook for 15 minutes.
3) Remove eggs allowing them to completely cool. You may submerge them in a bucket of iced water or place them in your refrigerator overnight until you are ready to dye the eggs.
4) Once ready to dye the eggs, bring water to a boil. Once boiled, transfer water into several heat resistant cups or bowls. Use separate bowls for each colour desired.
5) Add in 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 10-15 drops of food colouring to the bowl and mix.
6) Gently place your eggs in the coloured water using either a spook or whisk.
7) Allow egg to sit for 15 minutes making sure it is fully submerged or turning the egg half way.
8) Once you love the colour, gently remove the egg and place on paper towels to dry.
9) Now time to play! Add your eggs to a sensory bin, decorate with Easter grass, stickers, markers, paint etc.

Another idea is to use a white crayon and decorate the eggs BEFORE dying them. The decorated part will remain white and will make for a unique pattern once complete.

Make sure to store your hard boiled eggs in the fridge when not in use.
